NYS grade 7 math scale scores: what 430 and 440 mean
The state turns a student's raw points into a scale score, and the score decides the level. For grade 7 math, 440 is the line below which New York schools must consider a student for academic intervention services, which is a different number from the start of a performance level.
Facts checked against NYSED pages on October 25, 2026.
Raw score versus scale score
A raw score is the points a student earned. A scale score is that raw score converted onto a common scale, so results from different test forms can be compared. Two students with the same raw score on the same test get the same scale score.
The two numbers parents hear about
| Number | What it is | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| 430 | Where Level 2 (partially proficient) has begun on recent grade 7 math score charts | NYSED performance level score ranges. Check the current chart; NYSED can change ranges. |
| 440 | The grade 7 math score below which a student must be considered for academic intervention services in 2026-27 | NYSED's AIS memo, which calls it the median score between Level 2 and Level 3 |
These are easy to mix up. 440 is not the proficiency line. It is a screening line: students below it are considered for extra help, and the school then uses its own procedure with several measures to decide who actually gets it.
Why raw-to-scale charts differ by year
Each year's test is a different set of questions, and some forms are a little harder than others. The conversion from points to scale score is adjusted so that a scale score means the same thing each year. That is why the same number of points can convert to different scale scores in different years.
One score is a snapshot
A scale score comes from one test on one day. It can be affected by sleep, nerves, or one unfamiliar question type. Look at it alongside classwork, and above all at which specific skills are solid. See what Level 1 means and what to do next.
